Spring has arrived...although you'd never know it by the weather we've been having lately!  With spring comes cleaning, to do lists on how you're going to work smarter, not harder and my favourite reorganizing!  On my last trip to Favourite I could see Carol had been busy putting those ideas into action.  It's really amazing how a bit of rearranging and great merchandising can transform a space!  Inspired by the new look I thought I would follow suit.  I've just brought in loads of new jewels and a few new display props, here's a sneek peek.  I was running out of time to take a few pics of the shop so you'll just have to see for yourself!

Nautical charms with ship wheels, starfish, anchors and seahorses showing pops of color with turqoise and coral.  Owls are always a t o o d l e s favourite and new styles have been designed with gemstone rings, onyx moons and bayong wood.  New collection has just arrived at Briers on west 4th!

Guess I've got a bit of time on my hands now that I'm all done for the season!  No reason not to get busy with a little DIY for the holidays.  I usually manage to get to the local craft shows and pick up some neat things for the kiddies on my list but was on the road this year and missed the boat.  

I stopped by Woven Studios for a visit to my buddies Meghan of Identity Apparel and Tiffany of Bangers and Mash.  Meghan had made me a quilted carrying case for my credit card machine that I had inadvertantly dropped a few weeks back... 15 minutes before the start of the Toronto One of a Kind show. Took four days to get a replacement but that's another story in itself!  This new case will keep my new machine safe and sound, thanks Megs!!! Anyhoo, I was able to dig through a pile of scrap fabric on my visit, some jersey, wool melton, and faux shearling.  I eagerly drove home dreaming up ideas for my 'owl stuffies'.

With the help of Google images I was able to take inspiration from a few and make my own.  I drew a pattern and cut out a templated from a large paper bag.  I like the ski goggle eyes and the 'Mr. Potato Head' body parts.  Keep it Simple!   

Okay, I know, this isn't a very good DIY cause I didn't take any step by step photos, sorry!  So I cut two of the body, one 'goggle mask', two 'mushroom' eyes, one nose, two arms and two feet.  I folded the fabric right sides together and cut two pieces at once.  Started with the front outside piece and topstitched on the 'arms'.  Then lay the feet upside down on top of the arms (outside fabric) so that when you stich the two pieces of fabric together the feet will be on the inside until you turn it right side out.  (picture would have been perfect for that one, I know!)I topstiched on the mushroom eyes on the faux shearling as well as the nose, and then stiched the 'goggles' onto the frontside above the wings.  Pin the two owl outlines together, good side inside (the feet will be inside too), and stiched it all around leaving a 3 inch gap.  I stuffed with polyfil I had from a new pillow I never made a cover for and did an invisible stitch closure.

Was super excited to see One of a Kind Vancouver had tweeted "Check it out @TOODLEBUNNY @lovejulesleathr @minkchocolates - Woot Woot!!! Oh yeah!!!"  I knew it had to be GOOD! And it is sooooo good!  The 'To Tame a Lion' cuff will be on Vancouver buses for the next little while, if you spot one let me know!!! xo T

Hasn't been much toodling around here, it's been a very busy summer! Yikes, really, it's fall!!!  Time was spent with my family in Calgary combined with a visit to see Shisomiso and Indigo Bay.   Continued on to Toronto after a few days, which I haven't been to in over ten years!   Was able to visit one of my shops that I had never seen in person, Vocado, located in the heart of Liberty Village.  Gorgeous space with a large focus on Canadian designers!  They have just recently opened a second location in Oakville, you will find TOODLEBUNNY at both locations mid October.

Made a trip out to Vancouver island this summer as well.  Started in Victoria with a visit to Rebel Rebel as well as Oscar & Libby's. Also met up with the owner of a very pretty store called Lark & Sparrow in the heart of Cook Village.  Had never been to this area of Victoria, it's so west coast cool!  New jewels available at all three locations!  A few select TOODLEBUNNY pieces will also be available at Bernstein & Gold, the most beautiful store in all of Victoria!  Had to stop myself from drooling over the Diane Von Furstenberg feather petal dress.  One day it will be mine!

The end of my island adventure took me to Tofino to visit one of my good pals as well as meet with the owner of Habit.  This store really is Tofino's mini MACY's, a great boutique! Providing quality wear for locals and tourists alike. Need something for the beach, for work, for going out, or just for hanging out, they've got it!  Habit carries a great selection of

t o o d l e s as well as select TOODLEBUNNY pieces.

I have the best job!  Travel, meet new people and make pretty things all day long!

I'm getting excited for Fab Fair this weekend!  I haven't done a show in the Heritage Hall since the last time I did Fab Fair in spring of 2008.

Hopefully I will be able to get it together for this weekend and have everything ready for the launch of my new t o o d l e s collection.  This collection will be the cheap and cheerful version of TOODLEBUNNY.  The collection will be just earrings to start off, all with base metal components mixed with natural elements of wood, shell and other bits and baubles.  The best part is that everything in the new collection will be under $30!  That's right, no typo there.  So come by and see TOODLEBUNNY and her new friend t o o d l e s, you won't be disappointed! 

WOW!  What a fantastic show!  Thank you to everyone who came out to Make It Edmonton last weekend, so great to see you!  Was very pleased to see some returning customers from last years show as well as some new customers that have found TOODLEBUNNY at Nokomis.  This is a fantastic shop that was just recently voted Edmonton's "Best Independent Women's Clothing Store"  in See Magazine.  If you haven't been you must check it out, so lovely!

How did it get to be March!  Wow, the year has really passed by so quickly.  I've been keeping busy working on new designs between my travels so far this year.  Went to Mexico in January for a well needed vacation after the madness of the holiday season.   Then headed out with a few friends to LA in February and am off on another get-away to NYC this weekend.  This one will really break the bank as my friend is a major shopaholic...I guess that's what credit cards are for!

I've applied for a few shows this year, so far I've confirmed the One of a Kind Show here in Vancouver, just waiting to hear about the rest.  I'll give you a hint though, I'll probably be in Edmonton in May and will most likely take a trip out to Calgary to visit some of my stores.  I'm also crossing my fingers on another but but don't want to give that one away just yet!

Did a bit of an update on the website, just wanted to lighten it up for the year.   I'm looking into possibly having some sort of on line shopping available on my site.  I didn't realize there are so many things to consider, so many price points, options, etc!  I just want to have a few items available for purchase if need be.  Any recommendations for 'do it yourself' shopping carts would be appreciated!

I'm so very excited to announce that TOODLEBUNNY has a new retailer in the heart of Gastown!  I met with Nicole of LYNNsteven at the One of a Kind Show this past fall.  I finally got to grab a sneek peek this past weekend of the store that will be opening any day now.  The store is an absolute must see!  The design is like nothing I've ever seen.  It's modern with clean lines but still maintains the heritage feel of Gastown with the original hexed tile flooring.   Reminds me of some of the shops in the heart of NYC, pop by and say hi!  Nicole is super sweet, you won't be disappointed!

TRUDY WYNANS -- TOODLEBUNNY

Adornment from nature

Trudy Wynans (a.k.a. Toodles, Toots or TOODLEBUNNY) was born and raised in Port Alberni and attended Malaspina University College before moving to Vancouver in 1995. She describes her designs as "an imaginative jewelry collection with feminine yet edgy pieces."

"I draw my inspiration from nature's flora and fauna, evidenced by the use of birds, leaves and tusks that have become signatures of my designs," she said. "The pieces vary from being simple and pretty to ones that are a bit more rock 'n' roll."

What materials do you use?

"I work mostly in 14-karat gold fill and combine with Swarovski crystals, charms, semiprecious stones, carved bone, brass and horn. I have recently started a collection of one of a kind and 'one of a few' pieces created exclusively from reclaimed vintage bits and baubles."

What kind of exposure has your work had?

"Juno-nominated Ndidi Onukwulu wore one of my necklaces on the red carpet at the Juno awards this year. She was also featured as one of 30 of Canada's most influential women and wore one of my cuffs for the photo shoot in the October (2009) edition of Flare magazine.

"I also just recently found out that Kim Basinger picked up three of my necklaces from a store in Yaletown while she was here filming The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud."

My first attempt at designing something with jersey!   Deconstructed a small woman's regular tee, added some metal chain/jersey braided shoulderstaps and tassels.  Kind of reminds me of those t-shirts that were slashed fringe embelished with colored pony beads from the eighties.  I think mine had a persian kitten with a rose with a bit of silver sparkle...oh how I loved that t-shirt!  I used to love taking apart vintage finds and 'modernizing' them back in highschool.  Haven't done that in a while, felt pretty good!  Who knows, maybe I'll make myself a few new summer tunics while I still remember how!

July 4 - July 11

Local designers and artists will be given both a ladies and a mens t-shirt as a blank canvas in which to create something fab. The tees will then be auctioned off with 100% of the proceeds going to the North Shore Women's Centre

My latest collection, ECOUTURE, conveys an image of old-world craftsmanship meeting modern day sustainable design. Pieces from this collection are hand-crafted predominantly with sustainable materials. Reclaimed leather, vintage dead-stock brass chains & charms, and rare finds are transformed with hand braiding, asymmetry and draped chains creating an environmentally conscious, yet fashionable jewelry line. ECOUTURE will focus on statement pieces that are fashion forward, yet totally wearable. The collection will be exclusive in the sense that these pieces will only be available as either one of a kind, or depending on material availability, limited to one of a few.
