Thanks to the team at Vancouver Fashion Week for the blog post, a little bit about me and my jewellery for the Sunday Showcase on September 24th, 2017.
Created by designer Trudy Wynans, Toodlebunny was launched in the spring of 2016 and has since then joined the ranks of talented jewelry designers in Vancouver. Her handcrafted designs feature everything from brass, gold, wood and semiprecious stones. Check out her Instagram to take a closer look at the pieces she has made.
VFW: What’s your most favourite piece that you have designed, so far? Why?
TW: There are so many favourites, but probably the most recent one is a statement piece I made fall 2016. It was one of those ones that I had a hard time selling because I loved it SO much! This piece looked fabulous on my client, so I was happy to see it go to a good home and knew she would adore it as much as I did. The piece was the Cleo Collar with hammered brass polished to a brilliant shine and a cascade of silver aura quartz points.
VFW: Do you remember what the first piece of jewelry you designed? What was it?
TW: I’ve been designing for just over 11 years. I believe the first piece I created was a sterling silver ring made in a casting class I took with the Vancouver School Board. I still have that ring and wear it on occasion. Although my current work is more focused on one of a kind pieces using mixed media and revamping vintage elements, those first experiences in silversmithing are really what made me want to become a jewelry designer.
VFW: Do you own a special piece of jewelry that is important to you? Something with significant meaning?
TW: My partner and I have been together for over 20 years. We never got married but he did give me a pair of diamond stud earrings about ten years ago. I wear these everyday and I signify these as my ‘ring’ and our commitment to each other.
Taking a bit of a break before the fall/xmas season madness. Shop and studio will reopen on September 7th, see you soon!

A vintage Mid Century Modern chair from my studio got a new life with a few staples and old fashioned elbow grease! This chair is by Burke, similar to the Tulip Style of Eero Saarinen for Knoll but without the high price tag. The chair has been well loved over the years and needed a facelift. I snapped a few pics along the way to show the transformation in this DIY upholstery project.
Got this awesome vintage vinyl from my uncles upholstery/furniture shop, Wynans Furniture. My uncle has had his shop since 1955 and let me tell you he has the best vintage shizz you can imagine!
1. Take a photo of the chair and parts along the way. This will help with putting it back together later, you think you remember but.... Unscrew the top from the underside and mark the front and back on the underside in pencil. I didn't mark front an back on my project as there were two screw holes on the back and only one in the front. With previous projects with square seats good to make note of sides, trust me on this one.
2. Remove the old vinyl. I didn't have a stapler remover so I used an old steel ice pick to prop up the staples and used leverage with needle nose pliers to remove them. Kinda 'rolled' the staples out as to opposed to pulling straight up.. I used the existing foam covering as it was in good shape and kept it intact.
3. Place your seat top side down on the back side of the vinyl and cut leaving a good 3 to 4 inches around. You'll need the extra length to pull on when stapling.
4. With vinyl straight I did the first two staples on the top and bottom as anchors and turned over to check it was straight.
5. Secure sides with a few staples and pull vinyl taught but not too tight. I alternated a few on all four points, top, bottom, left, right then started around one corner. I had seen on a YouTube video that someone used a heat gun to soften the vinyl to get smooth corners. I didn't have a heat gut so used a hairdryer on high to soften and it did the trick.
6. Finish stapling around, softening with hairdryer on corners and pulling fabric slightly taught. I staggered some of the staples to for more strength. Check your work as you go along.
7. Trim excess vinyl with scissors. I left about 1/2 an inch around the staples. Didn't want to cut too close except in spots that I needed access to the screw holes.
8. Turn the piece over as you go along to make sure you're on track. Smoooooth corners from my trusty hairdryer!
9. Finding your front and back markings from before, place your newly covered seat on the chair and screw into place. You may have to trim a bit of the excess fabric where it's a bit bulky in corners for a good fit.
Ta da! Done!

So excited about the new pieces I've been working on lately! Most of these are one of a kind, as focal pendants are vintage, but I will be able to recreate similar designs. The favourite so far (from my impromptu instagram and facebook posts) seems to be the long fringed necklace on the far left.
Gearing up for a trip out east next week, a visit to some of my existing stores and hopefully some new ones in Toronto. Any suggestions for some stores that you think would be a good fit for TOODLEBUNNY? Please let me know!
This year I'm opening up to changes not being such a scary thing, they say change is good, right?
Shop Cocoon did a bit of re-arranging this week with their accessories. I was a bit freaked at first, change...what ...nooooo! I'm a cautious gal...if something works leave it be. But when I took a peek at the new merchandising it was so great to see the new look, especially with someone else doing such a fantastic job with the display. With so many regulars coming by the store things have to be freshened up every once in a while or it just blends into the background. Now I get it, LOVE it and accept that 'it's a good thing'. Ohh Martha!
Got Craft?,is celebrating its 12th show this December 8 & 9 at the Croatian Cultural Centre! I'm pretty excited to be a part of this Vancouver Indie Craft fair aims to bring together a community that fosters handmade and D.I.Y. culture.
Being an earlybird has it's perks. Be one of the first 50 people each day to receive a FREE swag bag filled with goodies from the vendors and sponsors including Got Craft? gift cards worth up to $100!
Check out the Holiday look book for a sneek peek as to the treasures to be found at the show!
Hope to see you there!

UPDATE - December 2012
This necklace was featured in the Vancouver Sun in December as part of the FAB 5 : Statement Necklaces which was so awesome! A few days later I'm at Shop Cocoon and a gentleman asks if we have the necklace that was featured in the paper. A lucky lady, with a very lovely husband, got her wish of'Under the Mistletoe' for Christmas. Hope she also gets a kiss from him everytime she wears it!

My first Vancouver make it! and I'm super excited!!! I've been a huge supporter of make it! The Handmade Revolution from the start for their Edmonton and Calgary shows. I'm a very practical gal so it made perfect sense to design a multifunctional piece(s) of jewelry. 'Conversion' slyly appears as a long necklace with a pop of color...but looks can be deceiving!
The longer length allows you to wrap the chain around your neck twice to create a chunky layered necklace. I love the side tassel detail!
Conversions next move is to separate the bar chain necklace and the bracelet. The necklace is vintage deadstock 'Sarah Coventry' bar chain that makes a great layering piece or can stand on it's own. The adjustable bracelet has green magnesite woven with fine silvertone chains and a touch of pyrite aka 'fools gold'.
Okay the last move could be to wrap the complete piece around your wrist for a layered bracelet look, but a 5 in 1 seemed a bit gimmicky so that part is optional :)
This particular piece will be available at Briers in the next week along with new t o o d l e s and pieces from SS/12 TOODLEBUNNY collection as well!
UPDATE: A purple version of this necklace has just arrived at Barefoot Contessa on Main St. July 25/12
Hello Edmonton!!! Can't wait to see you again, it's been a while! I have had half a year to come up with so many new designs to share with you. The new collection is very Navajo inspired featuring chevrons, triangles and major pops of color. Tonnes of new styles of bracelets, rings and hand harness' that I'm totally rocking right now. Hope to see you there!

Spring has arrived...although you'd never know it by the weather we've been having lately! With spring comes cleaning, to do lists on how you're going to work smarter, not harder and my favourite reorganizing! On my last trip to Favourite I could see Carol had been busy putting those ideas into action. It's really amazing how a bit of rearranging and great merchandising can transform a space! Inspired by the new look I thought I would follow suit. I've just brought in loads of new jewels and a few new display props, here's a sneek peek. I was running out of time to take a few pics of the shop so you'll just have to see for yourself!

Guess I've got a bit of time on my hands now that I'm all done for the season! No reason not to get busy with a little DIY for the holidays. I usually manage to get to the local craft shows and pick up some neat things for the kiddies on my list but was on the road this year and missed the boat.
I stopped by Woven Studios for a visit to my buddies Meghan of Identity Apparel and Tiffany of Bangers and Mash. Meghan had made me a quilted carrying case for my credit card machine that I had inadvertantly dropped a few weeks back... 15 minutes before the start of the Toronto One of a Kind show. Took four days to get a replacement but that's another story in itself! This new case will keep my new machine safe and sound, thanks Megs!!! Anyhoo, I was able to dig through a pile of scrap fabric on my visit, some jersey, wool melton, and faux shearling. I eagerly drove home dreaming up ideas for my 'owl stuffies'.
With the help of Google images I was able to take inspiration from a few and make my own. I drew a pattern and cut out a templated from a large paper bag. I like the ski goggle eyes and the 'Mr. Potato Head' body parts. Keep it Simple!
Okay, I know, this isn't a very good DIY cause I didn't take any step by step photos, sorry! So I cut two of the body, one 'goggle mask', two 'mushroom' eyes, one nose, two arms and two feet. I folded the fabric right sides together and cut two pieces at once. Started with the front outside piece and topstitched on the 'arms'. Then lay the feet upside down on top of the arms (outside fabric) so that when you stich the two pieces of fabric together the feet will be on the inside until you turn it right side out. (picture would have been perfect for that one, I know!)I topstiched on the mushroom eyes on the faux shearling as well as the nose, and then stiched the 'goggles' onto the frontside above the wings. Pin the two owl outlines together, good side inside (the feet will be inside too), and stiched it all around leaving a 3 inch gap. I stuffed with polyfil I had from a new pillow I never made a cover for and did an invisible stitch closure.
Two gifts, no dollars just love and time!

I love getting a very nice surprise in my inbox every once in a while, don't you? Just want to say a very big thank you to Jen of the Toronto One of a Kind Show for choosing "Feather Y Bird Earrings" as one of the Star Picks for this year's show! The countdown begins...42 days until showtime!
A goldtone curved cylinder is surrounded by a mix of 8mm matte black onyx, natural rough cut pyrite, brass beads and bronze crystal rondelles. This 'Modern Mala' bracelet is accented with a gold plated pewter skull and finished with a handcut reclaimed leather tassel. Comfortable stretch fit, approximately 7” plus 3” tassel. Limited Edition of 25.
Complimentary healing stones are strung alongside the cylindrical focal point in an asymmetrical, yet balanced fashion. Pyrite, also know as Fool's Gold is a powerful protection stone and is very grounding. Matte Onyx gives strength and encourages happiness and good fortune. The piece is also Eco-friendly in that off cuts of Italian leathers, from a local handbag designer, are given a new life as a handmade tassel. Each strand is cut by hand and wirewrapped on this comfortable stretch fit bracelet.
Ah spring! Time to pack up the jewels and head out to Alberta and show new pieces from the collection. I LOVE travelling for shows and seeing returning customers. I only get out to Alberta in the spring and fall and it's so nice to connect with familiar faces. First up is Make it! Calgary, last weekend in April.
Then back home for a bit and head out to Edmonton Mid May. Make sure to use the $2 off coupon for admission, show on your smartphone, pick up a flyer or print one off. Hope to see you there!!!

Please let me know if you're coveting anything. I recently had a customer at my last show looking for a certain pair of earrings she saw on my website, unfortunatly I hadn't brought them to that particular show. :( my bad! I have such a wide range of jewels that sometimes I may forget to make or bring a particular design. So if you see something you like, and wanna take a closer look, please let me know!
Sorry for all the !!!!! I guess I'm just really excited about this show!!!!!
Hasn't been much toodling around here, it's been a very busy summer! Yikes, really, it's fall!!! Time was spent with my family in Calgary combined with a visit to see Shisomiso and Indigo Bay. Continued on to Toronto after a few days, which I haven't been to in over ten years! Was able to visit one of my shops that I had never seen in person, Vocado, located in the heart of Liberty Village. Gorgeous space with a large focus on Canadian designers! They have just recently opened a second location in Oakville, you will find TOODLEBUNNY at both locations mid October.
Made a trip out to Vancouver island this summer as well. Started in Victoria with a visit to Rebel Rebel as well as Oscar & Libby's. Also met up with the owner of a very pretty store called Lark & Sparrow in the heart of Cook Village. Had never been to this area of Victoria, it's so west coast cool! New jewels available at all three locations! A few select TOODLEBUNNY pieces will also be available at Bernstein & Gold, the most beautiful store in all of Victoria! Had to stop myself from drooling over the Diane Von Furstenberg feather petal dress. One day it will be mine!
The end of my island adventure took me to Tofino to visit one of my good pals as well as meet with the owner of Habit. This store really is Tofino's mini MACY's, a great boutique! Providing quality wear for locals and tourists alike. Need something for the beach, for work, for going out, or just for hanging out, they've got it! Habit carries a great selection of
t o o d l e s as well as select TOODLEBUNNY pieces.
I have the best job! Travel, meet new people and make pretty things all day long!
Have you checked out TLC*? I love this fashion and style magazine that is dedicated to promoting and inspiring the people that make this extraordinary magazine happen! This free magazine is published four times a year and can be found at select boutiques, book stores, cafes, etc around Vancouver. Wanna get your stuff featured in TLC*? Simply sign up and create a free account and submit your stuff to www.thislittlecity.com and if they like what they see they'll post your pics on their 'Featured Submissions'. How cool is that! If they REALLY, really like your stuff, it will be published in their quarterly magazine featuring Local artists and designers.
Finally took a few new pics of some of the new bracelet styles I've been working on. There would be more but they were a hot item at the Harmony Arts Festival! t o o d l e s made a big splash as well at the show, was lucky enough to have Diana Krall and Elvis Costello pop by the booth and pick up four pairs of these earrings! Yay t o o d l e s!!! So far t o o d l e s is available at Shop Cocoon, Rain Salon & Boutique, Rebel Rebel and coming soon to Shisomiso!
Working on sending out those wholesale orders from Calgary and Toronto from my trip last month. New jewels coming soon, I promise!!! Also keeping busy with doing some small website updates. I created a page to showcase those special One of a Kind pieces that I create every so often when inspiration hits me. Definately not the focus of my work but I do have so much fun designing these pieces. I will most definitely have a good selection of these at the One of a Kind show, how fitting! Been building up my collection of vintage bits and baubles, going to be fabulous!
I'm heading out to Las Vegas this weekend and then off to tour around Sedona, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. Gonna be smokin' hot out there (40+C) but the 1/2 Filipino in me loves the heat! Have a few secret shopping spots in Vegas that I hit up when I'm there, keep an eye out for lots of new designs this fall. I'm taking some time off from shows this fall to focus on designing new pieces, get an on-line store going and maybe catch up on that accounting....okay, maybe not the last one! I might not make it "showless" until the OOAK Vancouver show in December so if I do jump in on another event I'll definitely keep you posted!

I'm getting excited for Fab Fair this weekend! I haven't done a show in the Heritage Hall since the last time I did Fab Fair in spring of 2008.
Hopefully I will be able to get it together for this weekend and have everything ready for the launch of my new t o o d l e s collection. This collection will be the cheap and cheerful version of TOODLEBUNNY. The collection will be just earrings to start off, all with base metal components mixed with natural elements of wood, shell and other bits and baubles. The best part is that almost everything in the new collection will be under $30! That's right, no typo there. So come by and see TOODLEBUNNY and her new friend t o o d l e s, you won't be disappointed!
WOW! What a fantastic show! Thank you to everyone who came out to Make It Edmonton last weekend, so great to see you! Was very pleased to see some returning customers from last years show as well as some new customers that have found TOODLEBUNNY at Nokomis. This is a fantastic shop that was just recently voted Edmonton's "Best Independent Women's Clothing Store" in See Magazine. If you haven't been you must check it out, so lovely!
Also have a new store in Edmonton for you to get your TOODLEBUNNY jewels. Katwalk Shoes is Edmonton's newest 'Shoetique' that carries a bevy of niche labels just right for the season. Owners Tom and Kathy Holub (who trade in comfort and specialty footwear at Katwalk’s sister store, Wener Shoes, which has been around for over 60 years) do all their buying in Milan, focusing on bringing exclusives to the boutique. Amazing high fashion footwear, handbags, Italian hosiery, scarves, jewellery and more.

How did it get to be March! Wow, the year has really passed by so quickly. I've been keeping busy working on new designs between my travels so far this year. Went to Mexico in January for a well needed vacation after the madness of the holiday season. Then headed out with a few friends to LA in February and am off on another get-away to NYC this weekend. This one will really break the bank as my friend is a major shopaholic...I guess that's what credit cards are for!
I've applied for a few shows this year, so far I've confirmed the One of a Kind Show here in Vancouver, just waiting to hear about the rest. I'll give you a hint though, I'll probably be in Edmonton in May and will most likely take a trip out to Calgary to visit some of my stores. I'm also crossing my fingers on another but but don't want to give that one away just yet!
Did a bit of an update on the website, just wanted to lighten it up for the year. I'm looking into possibly having some sort of on line shopping available on my site. I didn't realize there are so many things to consider, so many price points, options, etc! I just want to have a few items available for purchase if need be. Any recommendations for 'do it yourself' shopping carts would be appreciated!

I'm so very excited to announce that TOODLEBUNNY has a new retailer in the heart of Gastown! I met with Nicole of LYNNsteven at the One of a Kind Show this past fall. I finally got to grab a sneek peek this past weekend of the store that will be opening any day now. The store is an absolute must see! The design is like nothing I've ever seen. It's modern with clean lines but still maintains the heritage feel of Gastown with the original hexed tile flooring. Reminds me of some of the shops in the heart of NYC, pop by and say hi! Nicole is super sweet, you won't be disappointed!
TOODLEBUNNY was interviewed last week by Sarah Petrescu from Victoria's Times Colonist. She wanted to feature a few Vancouver designers that will be participating in the upcoming IGLOO show this weekend. I was lucky enough to make the cut, thanks Sarah! Here's my bit...
TRUDY WYNANS -- TOODLEBUNNY
Adornment from nature
Trudy Wynans (a.k.a. Toodles, Toots or TOODLEBUNNY) was born and raised in Port Alberni and attended Malaspina University College before moving to Vancouver in 1995. She describes her designs as "an imaginative jewelry collection with feminine yet edgy pieces."
"I draw my inspiration from nature's flora and fauna, evidenced by the use of birds, leaves and tusks that have become signatures of my designs," she said. "The pieces vary from being simple and pretty to ones that are a bit more rock 'n' roll."
What materials do you use?
"I work mostly in 14-karat gold fill and combine with Swarovski crystals, charms, semiprecious stones, carved bone, brass and horn. I have recently started a collection of one of a kind and 'one of a few' pieces created exclusively from reclaimed vintage bits and baubles."
What kind of exposure has your work had?
"Juno-nominated Ndidi Onukwulu wore one of my necklaces on the red carpet at the Juno awards this year. She was also featured as one of 30 of Canada's most influential women and wore one of my cuffs for the photo shoot in the October (2009) edition of Flare magazine.
"I also just recently found out that Kim Basinger picked up three of my necklaces from a store in Yaletown while she was here filming The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud."

TOODLEBUNNY is available at Rebel Rebel, Oscar and Libby's and will be at the Out of Hand and Noel Bazaar fashion markets.
